KEXP at CMJ, Day 3 The Extra Lens

photos by Brittney Bush Bollay

The Extra Lens is one part John Darnielle (fromThe Mountain Goats) and one part Franklin Bruno (from Nothing Painted Blue and The Human Hearts). Slowly, over quite a few years, and in between their solo projects, this duo has put out a number of notable smaller releases. Darnielle, in particular, has recorded hundreds of songs solo and with other artists, but most memorably with longtime friend Bruno. Their combined work has blurred the lines between The Mountain Goats and The Extra Lens, making the times they collaborate special for fans of both bands. Undercard, the second full-length album from the band (formerly known as the Extra Glenns), is their first in nearly a decade. The album was just released on Merge Records as a follow-up to their debut album, Martial Arts Weekend. Mountain Goats fans definitely won’t be disappointed: All the heartbreak, depression, and despair are still there (be sure to check out their complementary songs, “Infidelity” and “Adultery”), but with the two of them back together, their energetic sound is now more polished and refined. In support of the new album, the band played four select East Coast dates with John Vanderslice, including their CMJ performance at the Mercury Lounge on Oct 21. The band performed an exclusive set for KEXP at CMJ broadcasting live from the Ace Hotel on Oct. 22. Check out the photos here:
