Candy Giver

IMG_0528

>> I think I've inhaled enough Furla Candy plastic fumes to last a lifetime as there were a ton of the bags at the Furla Regent Street store last night where myself and Kit from Style Slicker (in lieu of Shini from Park and Cube not being here...) were 'hosting' aka standing around and smiling at everyone.  I announced six winners of the Candy bag colour of their choice and luckily one of them was actually physically there so that we could all do a lot of collective whooping.  I *think* there's another London/UK winner in amongst this lot but anyhow here are the winners of the Candy bag and they'll be contacted shortly about getting their Candy fix.  Like I said, there is no proper rhyme or reason as to why I chose these "What's In Your Bag?" pics.  The randomness of my reasons means that I may as well have picked them out of a hat though reading the teensy tiny descriptive text perhaps clues you in too...

Chloe Morrison (Belfast/Amsterdam)

CMorrison Whats In Your Bag
A scarf from RA, (Antwerp), My passport in a wolf print holder, Very old leather gloves from Madova, (which despite having a hole in one finger I continue to wear because I love them and haven't had the chance to go back to Florence in a few years to get a new pair.  Of course I could just order a new pair online, but personally I find the experience of tripping over the Ponte Vechio , pausing for a moment outside the Madova shop front to swoon at the seemingly endless spectrum of coloured gloves displayed before going in to place my elbow on the little raised velvet cushion on the counter in order to get the length of my fingers measured an integral part of the glove buying process), Clinique hair comb, David Vann's new novel Caribou Island, A hardback Rhodia notebook, (with a postcard of my favourite beach - in Donegal - stuck in the inner back pocket), A pen bought in a stationery store in an Amsterdam purely for its purple and green striped pattern, Faber Castell pencils in case I want to do a bit of spontaneous drawing, My bicycle lights, (these, I admit, aren't the most aesthetically pleasing element in the photo - but as someone who spends a great deal of time cycling in Amsterdam, they're a truly invaluable and therefore  constant presence in my handbag), Marks and Spencer's Curiously Strong Mints, New Penguin Modern Classics' edition of La Grosse Fifi by Jean Rhys (this is as yet unread - I'm hoping to consume it in a single sitting when next waiting for a delayed bus/ train/ plane.  I bought it mainly because I truly love Rhys's writing, but I must admit that the sheer beauty of these new mini-books did perhaps influence my purchase a little), My USB stick, Topshop nail varnish in Awol, My iPod, (apparently prehistoric due to the fact that it is a Mini iPod, but I still cherish it dearly), Chloe perfume card samplers, (I use them as business cards - due to my name being, ahem, Chloe - my contact details are scrawled on the back in pencil in a manner that I hope is charmingly low-fi), My Pebble gobstopper ring, which due to being rather heavy starts the day on my finger but frequently ends the day in my handbag, My keys with a key ring improvised from an Acne logo-ed disc, My incredibly old mobile that resembles a Tamagotchi, A vintage purse, Liberty for Mac's lipstick in Peachstick, Dr. Lip lip balm

Discounted and Cheerful

,coach handbags on sale

I hesitate to use the appropriate 'c' word in the title because as we know it's all a relative term and certainly gandering about The Outnet, it's certainly not cheap by most people's stretch of the imagination.  Discounts though are cheerful judging by the popularity of sites like Gilt Group, Cocosa and Yoox and The Outnet, with its recent redesign has the editing wand that means pretty much 99% of the stuff that goes in is unlikely to be a dud.  A couple of weeks ago, the team got together to do the always-welcome-by-photo-lovin'-bloggers move of allowing us to play !!Dress Up!! - I say that with capital letters because there's an inate sense of girly urgency and excitement to the term that rendered most of the participants' tweets on the day littered with exclamation marks.

At the shoot, they displayed a lot of the pieces that were online or going in, grouped into recognisable trend groups that of course points out that clothes from previous seasons of course still have current-trend relevancy depending on what you do with them.  Not that everything on your bod necessarily needs to be *excited and panicked voice* !!on-trend!! but there is something satisfying about buying things from previous seasons and for them not to be instantly recongisable because of course, ALL of us have photographic memories of S/S 11 collections imprinted into our heads.

IMG_0632 IMG_0634

So to my pre-picked rail... much of it isn't on site anymore but there is however a Style Bubble selection of things on The Outnet which match my tickboxes of BRIGHT, SHINY, NEON with the odd bits of grey thrown in for balanced measure...

IMG_0627

For the first few looks, I had a go at styling the handy model on set who did a wonderful job of having extra long limbs, bright blonde hair, angular cheekbones and generally showing some moves on camera that meant there were lots and lots of choice shots.

The make-up artist also handily gave me a tip about Barry M lip/eye pencils that can be used to fill the lips...

IMG_0638

See - these are model-esque MOVES, aided by the billowing movement of the Roksanda Ilincic trousers which are sadly not on sale anymore... but hopefully they have gone to a home where dramatic leg movements are appreciated.

Do you remember Carine Roitfeld designing a jumper for Lutz & Patmos?  Nope, I didn't either until it turned up at The Outnet shoot - it's still available and perhaps will be a pointer to future post-Paris-Vogue projects...

Finally I subjected the model to a cape n' dress combo...

Susie 3
(Wearing Clemens en August cape, monster beats pro, Eun Jeong dress, Alexander Wang boots that are coming on site soon I believe...)

What sort of a fashion blogger would I be if I didn't partake in the !!Dress Up!! shenanigans.  Prepping oneself with a dance move that is part Macarena/part Tragedy a la Steps is vital of course...

IMG_0661

I think I may have said something for The Outnet cameras that tried to be all theoretical and intelligent about why I picked this outfit out.  To be honest, it was just about the neon/yellow/vaguely-yellow-tinged bits, from the bag, the pleated panel on the 3.1 Phillip Lim dress, my own Issey Miyake skirt and the shoes... and hoping with a prayer that it all comes together to make some sort of sense.

If there were macaroons, cupcakes and some twee cups of tea, that would have been girlish !!! overload... I'll leave you with a xx instead that tops off an indulgent day of exclaiming too much.

Season Lowdown

>> Last season, I got stuck into the new look of Elle Collections and this season's issue, it's no different except the cover quite succinctly and effectively gives me a catwalk colour gradiation with all the satisfaction of a Pantone colour swatch.  Once again, I'm struck by the various ways of rounding up shows and trends that don't just use cut-outs of Catwalking shots... a summary that includes...

- 25 furry animal heads in the Topshop Unique show - oh badger, you shall sit atop of my head in the coming months... and I shall ask people to stroke your ears...

- 2,500 Japanese bloggers - I like their little notebooks printed with a dummy image so they can write down outfits more easily.  I actually prefer writing labels down myself in their notepads so that the spellings are correct...and because I wear too many things at once.

- 25 pom poms at Sonia Rykiel - Quite possibly the easiest DIY to plop out... involves cardboard rings and an episode re-run Friends...

- A close-up of the duck-feathered covered boots from Alexander McQueen's collection with hand finished 24-carat gold leaf... SHOWstudio also has a really good up close and personal video of the 'Angel' silver boots.

- John Paul Thurlow's illustrations dotting the lovely matt pages where articles by Germaine Greer and debates on fur rage on...

- A DIY tutorial on how to make your own winpole as seen in Yves Saint Laurent's collection.  Not sure how many of these you'll actually see on the street but I may attempt one in Liberty print fabric...

- Amazing logo nail art by Sophy Robson.

- Close-up detail shots of Givenchy's lace ensemble, cheap sports jerseys, scanned in Katerina Jebb-style and the matt sequins on silk from Celine.

- Images evoking moods of the season - Secretary and The Working Girl...

- I couldn't scan it in properly but Rob Ryan has also created a tribute to Alexander McQueen as a pull-out...

The Art of Giving Part II

>> I've taken to standing back and disgustingly admiring my Christmas consumption over the past few weeks which in addition to five different kinds of roast meats, my own weight in roast potatoes, sprouts, chocolate truffles and numerous varieties of cake and condiments includes a slew of festive-related gifting which as I said yesterday has been perhaps wildly extravagant in the context of our supposed downturned times.

My comeuppance will surely hit me next year when I'm going to be making poorly baked goods for people as gifts and Steve is going to be carving something out of a potato as a token of his affection.  For now though, consumer's delight is triumphant.  I'll wait a few more days yet before harsh reality comes knocking on the door.

With a stash of birthday cheques, the Liberty sale, which started early in a sneaky fashion a fortnight ago, came calling.  I far prefer spotting something on a rail which has been reduced quite discreetly on the tag without a 50/60% plaque signposting it as per all post-Christmas sales happening right now.  Following Alex Fury from SHOWstudio's good advice, I headed down there and went hunting for marked down tags and got myself a Proenza Schouler black mesh sleeveless shirt with leather collar and trim (not at Liberty anymore but Opening Ceremony has a few left) and a Richard Nicoll wool gingham dress, both heavily reduced.  Say hello to the school girl look of yesteryear, recalling a time when I was once addicted to thigh high/knee high socks at school and worried about whether me not getting straight A*'s would turn me into a social pariah...

DSC_2914

DSC_2928
(Double collaring it all up with the Whistles lightning bolt shirt)

Did I leave a 'Watch out for the next part..." cheesy foretelling at the end of my last post?  Why I believe I did!  My misunderstandings and lack of interest in bags for the past five or so years has manifested itself into a sudden desperate surge of desire in those wretched leather goods that normally cost an arm and a leg.  I feel dirty just thinking about the extortionate amount...

So when Steve presented me with his Christmas gift, telling me that it was "Nothing much..." and as I started ripping into it, glimpsed at that familiar gold brocade that decorates many of Miu Miu's store interiors, I wailed out "Oh NOOOOOO!  You DIDN'T!  That's TOO MUCH!".  That wasn't a false bewailment by the way... I did momentarily think he had struck a deal with a dubious loan shark to get it.  He did immediately reassure me that not every year would beget me a gift like this.  Like I said, I fully expect a hand-carved potato ornament next year.

IMG_0083 IMG_0121

The bag is from the limited edition range to celebrate the opening of the MAHUSSIVE 150 New Bond Street flagship store. I was cooing over the deep luscious brocade ones, eliminating the more expensive studded/furry/croc ones as impossible possessions.  Sensible Steve saw more longevity in a black leather bag though, which despite its compact size actually expands into three roomy compartments.  I've been rotating between feeling up a feel of the lush red linings of this Miu Miu leather one and the Mysuelly suede one.  Ah... leather goods heavy petting bliss...

Still I must keep reminding myself though that this is by no means a precedent.  Therefore the key question for next year is where does one find a vegetable carving knife?
